Why a Cut Key Alone Won't Start Your Car
Modern vehicles use an immobiliser system — a security chip in the key that must be electronically paired to the car's ECU before the engine will start. UK immobiliser standards are set by Thatcham Research. A key that's been cut to the correct shape but not programmed will turn in the ignition but the engine won't fire. This is by design.
Car key programming is the process of writing the key's transponder or proximity data into the vehicle's immobiliser, so the car recognises it as authorised. On older vehicles this is relatively straightforward. On newer systems — especially those with encrypted immobilisers — it requires specialist diagnostic equipment and, in some cases, reading data directly from the ECU.
