Why This Is Different

All Keys Lost Is Not the Same as Losing One Key

When one key is lost, the remaining key becomes the reference point — programming a replacement is a relatively routine process. When all keys are lost, there is no reference. The locksmith must access the vehicle's immobiliser data directly and generate entirely new key credentials from scratch.

This process is significantly more technical, requires a higher tier of equipment, and — on modern vehicles — is a legally restricted procedure. Under UK and EU SERMI regulations, only registered and vetted automotive security professionals can carry out all-keys-lost work on vehicles built after 2000. This exists to prevent vehicle theft.

I'm fully SERMI registered. Before any work begins, I'll ask for proof of ownership (V5C logbook or registered keeper documentation) — this is a legal requirement, not a formality. You can check what counts as proof of ownership on GOV.UK.

If your keys were stolen rather than lost, you should report the theft to police via GOV.UK first — I'll wait, and you'll need the crime reference number.

Standard Key Loss vs All Keys Lost

What Changes When Every Key Is Gone

❌ Standard approach (won't work)

Use existing key as reference to programme a new one. Requires at least one working key in the ignition to authorise the process.

✅ All keys lost approach

Access immobiliser data via OBD, EEPROM, or manufacturer-level tools. Generate new key credentials from the ECU directly — no original required.

❌ What breakdown services do

Recover the vehicle to a dealer. You pay for recovery, then wait days for a dealer appointment. Total cost significantly higher.

✅ What I do

Attend your location. Programme new keys on-site. You drive away. No recovery truck, no dealer wait, no inflated pricing chain.

❌ Non-SERMI locksmith

Cannot legally carry out all-keys-lost work on post-2000 vehicles. May attempt it anyway using restricted methods — legally and technically risky.

✅ SERMI registered (me)

Legally authorised to access manufacturer immobiliser data. Proper credentials, proper process, fully insured for every job.

⚠️ If a locksmith offers all-keys-lost work without asking for proof of ownership or SERMI credentials — walk away. It's illegal and a red flag.
The Process

How All Keys Lost Works — Step by Step

From your call to driving away. More involved than a standard key job — but done on-site, at your location.

1

You Call or WhatsApp

Tell me your vehicle, location, and situation. I confirm I can help and give a realistic time estimate immediately.

2

Ownership Verified

I'll ask for your V5C or keeper documentation — legal requirement before any all-keys-lost work begins. No exceptions.

3

I Come to You

I attend your exact location — home, work, car park, or roadside. Full equipment in the van. No tow required.

4

Immobiliser Accessed

I connect to the vehicle's ECU via OBD or EEPROM to read the existing immobiliser data — the foundation for generating new key credentials.

5

New Keys Generated

New key data is written to fresh blanks and programmed to your vehicle's system. Old lost keys are simultaneously erased from the immobiliser — your vehicle is secure again.

6

Full Test & Away

Every key tested — start, lock, unlock, and where applicable keyless entry and push-start. I don't leave until everything works.

Your Vehicle Stays Secure

Lost Keys Are Erased. Your Vehicle Stays Safe.

A question every customer asks: what happens to the keys I lost?

When I programme new keys to your vehicle, the old key data is simultaneously deleted from the immobiliser. Any lost or stolen keys are wiped from the system — they become completely inert. They will not start, unlock, or interact with your vehicle in any way.

This means that even if whoever has your lost keys finds your vehicle, those keys cannot be used to access or start it. Your vehicle is as secure after the job as it was when it left the factory with its original keys.

For extra peace of mind on theft situations, report the loss to police via GOV.UK and contact your insurer. I can provide documentation of the work carried out if needed for insurance purposes.

Common All Keys Lost Situations

When People Call Me for This

🏷️
Bought at auction with no keys
Common with trade and private auction sales. Vehicle is on-site, no keys included. I attend the auction or collection point and programme keys before you drive away. See also: car key programming.
🏠
Keys stolen from home
Burglary or key theft from inside the property. Police report filed, now need vehicle keys — and need old keys erased so the vehicle can't be taken.
🌊
Keys lost — completely gone
Lost on a night out, dropped on a walk, gone in water. No idea where they are. No spare. Needs a full all-keys-lost process to get back on the road.
🚐
Work van — both keys missing
Tradesmen losing van keys is one of the most time-critical callouts I handle. A day without the van costs far more than the locksmith.
👴
Deceased relative's vehicle
Inheriting a vehicle where the keys have been lost or can't be located. Proof of executor status or probate documentation accepted.
🚗
Second-hand purchase, one key never worked
Bought a vehicle where the single supplied key stopped working or was never functional — requires full all-keys-lost process to start fresh.

Pricing

All Keys Lost — How Pricing Works

All keys lost is the most technically complex key job. Pricing reflects the equipment, time, and legal process involved — and is always confirmed before work starts.

Free Quote — No Obligation
Call or WhatsApp — quoted within minutes for most vehicles
Pricing for all-keys-lost work varies depending on your vehicle's make, model, year, and immobiliser generation. Newer vehicles with encrypted systems take longer and require more specialist equipment access. I'll give you a clear, fixed quote before any work begins — no surprises on the invoice. If it can't be done on-site, I'll tell you upfront.
📞 Call 07515 603427
Vehicle Age & Immobiliser Generation
Older immobiliser systems are generally faster to work with. Newer encrypted systems require more specialist steps but are still handled on-site.
Vehicle Make & Model
Some makes require manufacturer-level data access via SERMI credentials. Covered for all 29 makes — including BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Vauxhall.
Key Type Required
Standard transponder key, proximity/keyless fob, or smart push-start key — each has different blanks and programming requirements.
Number of Keys Needed
Most customers want two keys — one working set and a spare. Programming two at the same callout is more cost-effective than two separate visits.
OBD vs EEPROM Access
If the vehicle has an OBD programming route, it's faster. Some older or more complex vehicles require EEPROM chip access — more time-intensive but still done on-site.
Location Within Manchester
I cover all of Greater Manchester. Emergency or out-of-hours callouts may include a callout element — always confirmed before travel.

FAQ

All Keys Lost — Common Questions

Yes — this is exactly what all-keys-lost covers. Using the Smart Pro, Autel IM608, and ACDP where needed, I access the vehicle's immobiliser data directly and generate new key credentials from scratch. No original key is required. Proof of ownership is required instead.

Your V5C logbook is the primary document — even a photo of it sent via WhatsApp is acceptable in most cases. If you don't have the V5C to hand (e.g. just bought the vehicle), a purchase receipt, auction documentation, or insurance certificate in your name may be accepted. I'll confirm what's needed when you call. You can read more about the V5C on GOV.UK.

As part of the programming process, all existing key data is erased from the immobiliser and replaced with the new key credentials. Any lost or stolen keys become completely inert — they cannot start, unlock, or communicate with your vehicle in any way. Your vehicle is secure.

Most jobs are completed within 45–90 minutes of my arrival, depending on vehicle make, model, and immobiliser generation. Complex encrypted systems or older vehicles requiring EEPROM access may take longer. I'll give you a realistic time estimate when you call.

Yes — report the theft via GOV.UK or call 101. You'll receive a crime reference number which your insurer will need. I can work around your timeline — call me at the same time and I'll coordinate the callout while you deal with the report. The stolen keys will be permanently erased from your vehicle as part of the job.

No. The vehicle stays exactly where it is. I come to your location — home, car park, roadside, or workplace — with all the equipment needed to programme keys on-site. Recovery trucks are needed when a dealer does this job, because the vehicle has to get to them. I come to you instead.

Yes — it's a more involved process. There's no existing key to use as a reference, the programming route is more complex, and SERMI-level credentials are required for modern vehicles. The exact cost depends on your vehicle — call or WhatsApp for a quote. Even so, it's almost always cheaper than recovery + dealer pricing, and done the same day.

I cover all 29 makes including BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Vauxhall, Audi, Toyota, Land Rover, and more. The very small number of exceptions are certain brand-new models with manufacturer-only programming locks — I'll tell you honestly if that applies to your vehicle before I travel. See the car key specialist Manchester page for the full list of makes covered.
