Diagnose Before You Replace

Most Fob Problems Are Cheaper to Fix Than You Think

The most common mistake people make is assuming a dead or erratic fob means buying a brand new key. In the majority of cases, it doesn't. A fob that's stopped working usually has one of a handful of fixable causes — and a full replacement is only needed when the internal circuit board has genuinely failed.

The important thing is diagnosing the actual cause before spending money. I test the fob on-site using diagnostic equipment, identify the real fault, and tell you honestly whether it can be repaired or needs replacing. Which? has useful guidance on car key fob issues if you want a consumer overview first.

If replacement is the right answer, I carry equipment to programme a new fob on-site — covered under car key replacement Manchester. You won't be told you need a replacement if you don't.

💡 Honest diagnosis first. I'll tell you exactly what's wrong and what it'll cost before any work starts. If a new battery fixes it, that's what I'll say.
What's Actually Wrong With Your Fob?

Common Remote Fob Faults — and What They Mean

🔋
✅ Dead or weak battery — fixable
The most common cause by far. CR2032 or CR2025 typically. Symptoms: fob works intermittently, needs to be very close to vehicle, or stopped working suddenly. Often DIY-fixable if you can open the casing.
📡
✅ Fob lost sync with vehicle — fixable
After a battery change, flat car battery, or ECU reset, the fob can lose its pairing with the vehicle. Buttons do nothing even with good battery. Requires resync or reprogramming — done on-site in minutes.
🖲️
✅ Worn or failed button contacts — fixable
Buttons feel mushy, need multiple presses, or one button works but others don't. Conductive rubber contacts wear out over time. Often repairable without replacing the full fob.
🪲
✅ Cracked or broken casing — fixable
Housing cracked, split, or the fob has come apart. Circuit board may be fine. New casing with the original board and transponder chip transferred across — preserves all programming.
⚠️ Failed circuit board — replacement needed
Water damage, impact damage, or age-related failure of the internal PCB. If diagnosis confirms the board is dead, a new fob needs to be cut and programmed — covered under car key replacement.

How It Works

Remote Fob Repair — From Call to Fixed

1

Describe the Fault

Call or WhatsApp — tell me your vehicle and exactly what the fob is or isn't doing. I can often narrow the likely cause before I arrive, saving time on-site.

2

I Come to Your Location

Home, work, car park — anywhere in Greater Manchester. Full diagnostic equipment in the van. No need to come to me.

3

Fob & Vehicle Tested

I test the fob signal, battery voltage, button contact continuity, and vehicle receiver response. Proper diagnostic — not guesswork.

4

Fault Confirmed & Quoted

I tell you exactly what's wrong and what the fix costs. No work starts until you agree. If a replacement is the honest answer, I'll say so and quote for that too.

5

Repair or Reprogram On-Site

Battery replaced, contacts cleaned or replaced, casing swapped, or fob reprogrammed to the vehicle — done at your location, usually within 30–45 minutes.

6

Full Function Test Before Leaving

Every button, locking, unlocking, boot release, and (for proximity fobs) keyless entry and push-start tested. I don't leave until it works.

When a Resync Is Needed

Why Your Fob Loses Sync — and How It's Fixed

Modern remote fobs communicate with your vehicle using a rolling code system — each button press sends a unique, sequentially numbered code. If the fob gets significantly out of sequence with the vehicle's receiver (e.g. buttons pressed when out of range many times, or after a battery or ECU reset), the vehicle stops accepting the codes.

This is a security feature, not a fault — it prevents signal interception. But it means a fob that was working perfectly can suddenly appear dead for no obvious reason. The fix is a resync procedure, which resets the sequence counter. On some vehicles this is done via a button sequence; on others it requires diagnostic tools connected to the OBD port.

After a battery change on the vehicle or the fob, resync is often required. Many customers assume the fob has failed at this point — it usually hasn't. See also: AA guidance on key fob troubleshooting for a basic checklist before calling.

After changing fob battery
Battery swapped, now fob doesn't work — almost always a resync issue, not a failed fob.
After flat car battery or jump start
ECU reset during battery replacement or jump can cause fob to lose sync with the vehicle receiver.
After sitting unused for months
Fob buttons pressed in a drawer or bag — rolling code gets out of range and vehicle stops accepting signals.
Intermittent signal, then nothing
Fob working at close range only, then stops — rolling code boundary or weak battery causing premature desync.
⚠️ Don't assume the fob is broken

Before buying a replacement fob or key, call me. A resync takes minutes and costs a fraction of a replacement. I'll diagnose the actual fault first — if it's a resync, you'll know and be sorted quickly. If it's something else, I'll tell you honestly.

Pricing

Remote Fob Repair — How Pricing Works

Repair is almost always cheaper than replacement. Pricing depends on what's actually wrong — confirmed before any work starts.

Diagnosed First — Quoted Before Work Starts
Describe your fault and vehicle — most jobs quoted on the call
Remote fob repair pricing depends on the fault type, fob type, and vehicle make. A simple resync is a quick job. A casing swap or button repair takes longer. A full fob replacement (if genuinely needed) is priced separately. You'll know the cost before I start anything — no surprises on the invoice.

Fob Dead After Battery Change — Resynced in 15 Minutes

A customer in Didsbury had changed the battery in her key fob herself — the fob then completely stopped working. She'd been quoted a full replacement key by another company. I attended her home, ran a diagnostic, confirmed it was a desync caused by the battery swap, and resynced the fob to her vehicle in under 15 minutes. No replacement needed.

Cracked Casing, Buttons Falling Out — New Shell, Original Chip Kept

A customer in Bolton had a fob with a badly cracked housing — the buttons were barely held in and the fob worked intermittently. Rather than programme a full replacement key, I fitted a new matching casing and transferred the original circuit board and transponder chip across. All programming preserved, cost a fraction of a new key.

Van Remote Dead After ECU Reset — Reprogrammed Same Morning

A tradesman in Salford had his van's ECU reset during a garage visit — afterwards, both remotes stopped working entirely. The van could be started with the physical key but central locking was inoperable. I attended his yard, reprogrammed both remotes to the vehicle's receiver via OBD, and tested full lock and unlock function. Back to normal before his first job.

FAQ

Remote Fob Repair — Common Questions

Almost certainly not. Battery changes frequently cause fobs to lose sync with the vehicle receiver — it's one of the most common callouts I handle. The fob itself is usually fine. A resync takes minutes. Don't buy a replacement key until this has been ruled out.

Yes — in most cases. If the fob has lost sync, or the vehicle's ECU has been reset, reprogramming restores full function without needing a new fob. The exceptions are when the internal circuit board has physically failed (water damage, impact, age). I diagnose the actual fault before recommending anything.

No — reprogramming or resyncing one fob doesn't affect other keys registered to the vehicle. All existing keys remain fully functional. I test all keys before leaving to confirm everything is working correctly.

Yes. Partial button failure is usually a worn rubber contact pad under the buttons — a mechanical wear issue, not an electrical fault. The contact pad can be replaced or cleaned, restoring full button function. This is much cheaper than a full replacement and preserves all your existing programming.

Possibly — it depends on the extent of water ingress and whether the circuit board has corroded. I'll assess it on-site. If the board is salvageable, it can often be dried, cleaned, and resealed in a new casing. If the board has failed, a new fob will need to be programmed — covered under car key replacement Manchester. The AA's fob troubleshooting guide has some useful first steps for water-damaged fobs.

A resync or battery-related fix takes 15–30 minutes. A casing swap or button contact repair takes 30–45 minutes. A full reprogramming job takes 30–60 minutes depending on the vehicle. I'll give you a realistic estimate when you describe the fault on the call.

I come to you — home, workplace, car park, or anywhere across Greater Manchester. You don't need to travel. I carry full diagnostic and programming equipment in the van for every callout.
