2006 MINI key replacement in Wigan
A remote-locking fault had been mistaken for a key problem. Following an earlier repair attempt, this MINI convertible would no longer start. We made a new key, added it to the EWS module, and the engine fired straight up. The electrical issue behind the remote locking still needs an auto electrician before remote programming.
A Manchester Unlocked job: starting restored, with the remaining electrical work clearly identified.

Manchester Unlocked, this guy is a genuine craftsman, i was left with a none running vehicle by a so called expert who diagnosed faulty key, then said faulty battery and then blamed faulty starter, all these components had not failed. I then had to get my vehicle recovered home. I rang a few companies who didn't want to take it on after someone else had made a mess of it. I called Carl @ Mcr Unlocked and explained , he arranged to attend at my home, I recognised that this guy knew what he was doing within minutes, he set about finding out what the other guy had managed to corrupt and damage and disassembled, repaired and rebuilt everything until I finally had my car back up and running and able to lock securely. I cannot recommend Carl ( MANCHESTER UNLOCKED) Enough. This guy has the knowledge, the equipment and the skill and tenacity in heaps and his bill was less than his initial quote. Thanks again Carl. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Bernard Ryan, in Wigan.Posted on Google![]()

Great service, messaged on Sunday evening and Carl got back to me straight away, agreed a fob replacement the next morning. Carl arrived on time, was very polite and the cost was around a third of the dealer price and of course came to me. A remote-locking problem had become a non-starting MINI
This Wigan job involved a 2006 MINI convertible that had started with one problem and ended up with another. The remote locking was not working, and somebody had already been out to try to repair it. The fault had been treated as a key issue, but following that attempt the car would no longer start.
By the time Manchester Unlocked attended, the owner needed more than help with the remote buttons. The car needed its starting problem sorted out, and the original locking fault still needed to be understood. Getting those two issues separated was important: a car that will not start and a remote that will not lock the doors are different symptoms.
The previous work had left the situation in a mess. We focused on the work needed to get the engine running again, while keeping a clear account of what would still need attention afterwards.
A new key added to the EWS module
We made a new key and added it to the MINI's EWS module. With the new key in place, the car fired straight up. That was the result the owner needed after being left with a vehicle that would no longer start.
The EWS module was the part of the vehicle's immobiliser system involved in this key job. Our work restored starting with the new key. There is no need for the owner to know the programming procedure before calling; the useful information is what the car did before the fault, what changed and what work has already been attempted.
For this MINI, the starting result was immediate once the new key had been added. That does not mean the original remote-locking fault had disappeared, and we were clear about that distinction.

Why the remote locking still needed electrical work
The remote locking was not working because of an electrical issue associated with moisture in the convertible's roof. That problem needed attention from an auto electrician. Replacing or adding a key could not be presented as a complete repair for an electrical fault elsewhere on the car.
This was the important difference between the starting repair and the remaining work. The engine now started with the new key, but the remote-locking system was not ready to be signed off as fully working. The owner needed the electrical issue completed before the remote programming stage.
Moisture was relevant to this particular vehicle. We have not described a failed component, a wiring repair or a completed roof repair because those were not part of the key work carried out on this visit. The next step is for the auto electrician to deal with the electrical fault, with the car then ready for remote programming.
Engine running, with a clear next step
The outcome of our visit was a MINI that fired up again after the new key was added to EWS. The remaining remote-locking work was identified rather than hidden behind a claim that everything had been fixed.
The job now needs an auto electrician to complete the electrical side before remote programming can be finished. That gives the owner a clear handover: the starting issue has been resolved, and the original locking fault still has a defined next step.
When work is split between a locksmith and an auto electrician, it helps to know which part has been completed. In this case, the new key and starting result belong to our visit. The moisture-related electrical repair and the final remote-locking result are still outstanding.
A remote that does not work is not automatically a faulty key
It is understandable to suspect the key when the remote buttons stop working. They are the part the driver is holding, so they are often the first thing people blame. This job shows why that assumption needs checking before further work is carried out.
Explain the symptoms separately when you contact us. Does the car start? Do the remote buttons do anything? Has the problem been intermittent, or did it begin after another repair attempt? A simple description of what changed is more useful than deciding in advance that the key must be replaced.
The MINI's original locking problem and its later failure to start needed separate attention. Making a new key and adding it to EWS dealt with the starting problem on this visit. The electrical cause of the remote-locking fault required a different repair.
Tell us about any work already attempted
If somebody has already worked on a vehicle, mention that when you enquire. Tell us what the original problem was, what was tried and how the car behaved afterwards. Even if you do not know the technical details, the order of events can help make the situation clearer.
Keep any existing keys available and share any notes or information you have been given about the earlier work. If there are known water or electrical issues, mention those as well. You do not need to diagnose them yourself; just explain what you know.
For a MINI key replacement enquiry, send the registration, year and vehicle location. Also say whether the engine currently starts and whether any working key remains. We can then discuss the appropriate assessment and the next step for your car.
Summer outings with his dogs
There was a nice personal detail behind this job, too. The owner saw the MINI convertible as the perfect car for trips with his dogs in the summer. Getting it starting again was a useful step towards enjoying it rather than having it sit there with another unresolved problem.
The electrical work still needs completing, but the owner now has a running car and a clearer idea of what comes next. That is a much better position than being left unsure whether the key, the starting system or the remote locking is responsible for every symptom.
Once the remaining work is finished, the little convertible can get back to the sort of use he had in mind: summer days out with his dogs.

MINI key and remote-locking FAQs
Can a MINI start even if the remote locking is not working?
On this job, yes. After we made a new key and added it to the EWS module, the 2006 MINI fired straight up. The remote locking still needed attention because of a separate electrical issue.
What did Manchester Unlocked do on this Wigan job?
We made a new key for the 2006 MINI convertible and added it to the EWS module. The car started immediately afterwards. The moisture-related electrical fault affecting the remote locking still needs an auto electrician.
Was the remote locking repaired during the visit?
No. The car's starting problem was resolved with the new key. The electrical issue associated with moisture in the convertible roof needs to be completed by an auto electrician before the remote programming stage.
What should I tell you if another repair attempt made the car stop starting?
Explain the original fault, what work was attempted and what changed afterwards. Send the registration, location and year, and say whether any working key remains. Have existing keys and any information about the earlier work available.
Can you help with a MINI key problem in Wigan?
